Great Houses of Westeros

Less than a month from now we will be able to witness the much anticipated and much awaited series of todays generation. I am talking about the fantasy drama series bled with medieval style “Game of Thrones”. On the exact date on April 1, 2012, the hunger and struggling game will start as the second season of Game of Thrones will about to begin. Watch Game of Thrones season 2 online and don’t miss to witness the upcoming second season that will focus on the second book of George R.


Today we will going to know all about the Great Houses of Westeros. All in all there are a total of nine great house in Westeros and it would be better if you will watch Game of Thrones season 2 episode 1: The North Remembers Online and have a much deeper insight on it. Let us welcome them and give them respect as we enter their houses. The journey has begun so let’s enter the first house.

1. House Arryn. With the motto “As High As Honor” and a white falcon and moon against a dark blue field as its sigil, this house is the oldest and purest line if the Andal nobility and has ruled over the Vale for millennia. House Arryn also known as the Warden of the East has a castle that sits atop a mountain in the beautiful and enchanting Eyrie. The head of this house is Jon Arynn, his wife (Lady Lysa Tully) is actually the sister of Lady Catelyn of House Stark. Jon and Lysa has a one child, a boy named Robert Arynn. Jon met his demise when he was the King’s Hand. It is believed that the Lannisters are responsible for his sudden death.

2. House Baratheon. This house became the ruling house of Westeros after the death of The Mad King which also lead to the crowning of Robert Baratheon as the King of The Seven Kingdoms. House Baratheon’s family sigil is a black stag on a golden field as is known for the motto “Ours is the Fury”. 




3. House Greyjoy  known for the motto of “We Do Not Sow”.  This house is located in the Western coast of Westeros making them the ruler of the Iron Island and Iron born. House Greyjoy is represented by their sigil which is a golden kraken against a black field.





4. House Lannister of Casterly Rock, Known as the house with the most number of warriors and wealth, they are known for the motto “Hear Me Roar”. This family is known not only with their wealth and power but is also known for being solid with each other and each member of the Lannister family are noted to be blonde, beautiful and deadly as well. To those who don’t know yet, Jamie Lannister is the one of killed the Targaryen king. A golden lion against a crimson field is House Lannister’s sigil.

5. House Martell located on the peninsular of Dorne is known for  a golden sun pierced by a spear as a sigil and is known for the motto “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”. Standing firm to their motto, House Martell is the only house of Westeros which quiete successfully refused the Targaryen invasion. But after a marriage alliance was formed with House Targaryen, geez, it is what you think it is. Keep an eye on this house cause in the days to come, Prince Maron Martell will marry the sole survivor of House Targaryen.

6. House Stark of the North, this house is represented by a grey Direwolf on a field of white sigil.
They’re from the impressive lineage of the First Men or the first human to ever step foot in the lands of Westeros, give way cause “Winter Is Coming”, that’s the motto to remember when talking about. 




7. House Tully, “Family, Duty,  Honor” this house has been the ruler of the Riverlands for centuries. The head of the house is Lord Hoster Tully, father of Catelyn and Lysa Tully who are married to the powerful Starks and Arryns. 





8. House Tyrell, the ruling family of the Reach.  “Growing Strong” is their motto. Named as the Warden of the South and lead by Lord Mace Tyrell, the castle of this prominent house lies in High garden. This family will try their luck on getting closer to the Iron Throne by attempting to arrange a marriage between King Joffry Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell.




10. And lastly the House Targaryen of Dragonstone, for 300 years, House Targaryen controlled the Iron Throne, their 300 years of reign ended after Robert Baratheon’s rebellion. But mind you, the sole survivor of this family, Daenerys Targaryen will try her best to reclaim the Iron Throne. Join her when she raises the Targadyen sigil of three-headed red dragons agaisnt a black field. When that day comes, hear Dany says their family motto “Fire and Blood”.
